Show Preview: Retribution Gospel Choir
Retribution Gospel Choir play Great Scott tonight with Drew O'Doherty and Girlfriends. To say I'm a bit excited to catch RGC live is a major understatement. The band featuring Alan Sparhawk and Steve Garrington of Low as well as EricPollard(No Wait Wait) just released their second album, 2 this past Tuesday and I for one can't get enough of it. 2 is a worthy and hard rocking follow up to there 2008 debut. Get there early to catch two of Boston's finest start the evening off. Doors open at 9PM for this 18+ show.
A Message From The National In an e-mail sent out to fan club/mailing list members this morning the band have announced some details on their as yet untitled next album and live dates that will include a show at The House of Blues on June 2nd.
Hi Everyone!
We have exciting news for you this morning. We are very pleased to announce the first tour dates in support of our new album in April, May and June.
The as of yet untitled follow-up to Boxer will be released worldwide in May on 4AD (specific date TBA). The shows begin at the Big Ears festival in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 28th followed in April by two special shows April 22nd and 23rd at the National in Richmond, VA. We will then play Royal Albert Hall in London on May 6th, Le Zenith in Paris with PAVEMENT on May 7, and Astra in Berlinon May 9 before starting a North American tour in Los Angeles at the Wilternon May 22nd. Ramona Falls will be opening our US shows on the west coast.
We will announce support acts for the tour and have more specific news about the new album in the coming weeks. All dates are listed below.
Seabear are an orchestral folk pop band from Reykjavik, Iceland fronted by Sindri Mar Sigfusson. The band has grown from it's humble beginnings of Sigfusson's one man lo-fi pop outlet to the seven member pop collective that is today. One listen and I was pretty much hooked on their debut, Ghost That Carried Us Away and they're set to return with an arguably better set of songs and a trip to U.S. in their future.
Seabear will release their second full length, We Build A Fire as a well as the 6-song EP The Fire Dies in March courtesy of Morr Music. With live dates already confirmed at this years SXSW, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the band will travel east for some shows in our neck of the woods.
Here's the first single from the forthcoming We Build A Fire: [MP3/Stream]Seabear - Lion Faced Boy
On March 2nd New Zealand's pysch-pop outfit The Ruby Suns will release Fight Softly, their 3rd LP and 2nd for Sub-Pop. The forthcoming album is another beat centric affair that favors scuzzy electronic melodies over strumming guitars. I'm already hooked on the albums first single, Cranberry.

Just prior to the end of the year Mac McCaughan released a new Portastatic EP. Make it Sound In Tune is a collection of 7 songs, well covers from the Merge Records roster. Mac has explained the idea behind the exclusive digital EP, “The idea for a whole EP of Merge covers stemmed from both listening to the SCORE! Merge covers compilation and from doing bookstore events to promote the Our Noise book, wherein we’d play some acoustic covers of songs that came out on Merge. Time permitting, this really could have been a much longer record, but in the spirit of quitting while I was ahead and also turning this in before the end of the year, I stopped at seven songs. Obviously, the Merge catalog is full of hundreds—thousands, actually—of songs I love, so I picked ones I either knew well or thought I could re-create without defiling too harshly. It wasn’t easy to narrow down, so I just tried not to think about it too much, and then time constraints set in…”
Thanks to the fine folks at MBV Music for posting one of the tracks from the new EP. You can also stream the entire album over at the Merge Store.
Check out this cover of Portastatic covering (with help) one of my favorite Destroyer tracks.
